Adventure Summary: A one-session mystery for four to five 5th-level characters. When buried bells ring beneath Embermarket and shoppers lose fragments of memory, the party must trace a masked cult through old procession tunnels, rescue the Bellkeeper, and keep the first Crown Shard out of a volcanic furnace.
Ashfall Crown Saga: Part 1 of 4. This adventure stands alone. The saga continues with The Cinderwake Caravan.
Overview
Embermarket clings to the basalt terraces of Vhal Mora, a trade city built above the sealed ceremonial roads of a forgotten ash-king. During the busiest evening market, bronze bells begin ringing beneath the plaza. Each peal erases one small memory from everyone who hears it. Merchants forget prices, guards forget faces, and a child forgets the way home.
The disturbance is a deliberate excavation. Sister Caldra, leader of the quiet Ashen Choir, has learned that the largest buried bell conceals one piece of the Ashfall Crown. She needs only three more peals to loosen the shard from its bronze casing. The party has roughly three hours before the final ringing.
Background
The Ashfall Crown once allowed Vhal Mora’s rulers to command the pressure beneath the caldera. The last monarch broke it into four shards rather than let a usurper turn the volcano into a weapon. Priests hid the pieces along a ritual road, then altered the city’s records so no single keeper knew every location.
Standalone hook: Bellkeeper Nera Voss offers 600 gp to stop the ringing and return anyone trapped below. Saga hook: The recovered shard bears a route mark pointing into the western ash wastes, and Caldra’s notes name a caravan that will carry the next fragment at dawn.
Characters
- Nera Voss: Elderly keeper of Embermarket’s public bells. Dry, observant, and furious that someone turned her office into a digging site.
- Sister Caldra: Patient leader of the Ashen Choir. She believes controlled eruptions could save thousands from the next natural disaster, whatever the cost.
- Tavi Flint: A spice runner who saw masked figures enter the cistern, then lost the memory of their faces.
- Sergeant Oren Pell: Market watch officer trying to prevent panic while quietly forgetting the layout of his own district.
Setting
The upper market is crowded, bright, and unstable. Below it, the Procession Tunnel slopes through hot basalt chambers hung with bells of increasing size. Sound carries between rooms. Whenever the party fails a loud check or uses thunder damage, mark one Resonance. At three Resonance, the next bell peals and every character must succeed on a DC 13 Intelligence saving throw or lose proficiency in one skill of their choice until a short rest.
Clues should never stop the adventure. A failed investigation check costs time, attracts a patrol, or raises Resonance, but still reveals the next location.
Plot Outline
The characters stabilize the market, compare contradictory witnesses, find the concealed cistern entrance, navigate the bell gallery, free Nera, and confront Caldra at the Furnace Gate. They can win by force, by breaking the ritual’s acoustics, or by proving that the shard is already destabilizing the city.

1. The Forgotten Market
Run the opening as three successes before two failures using DC 13 Wisdom (Medicine) to calm confused victims, Charisma (Persuasion) to organize exits, Intelligence (Investigation) to compare receipts, or Wisdom (Perception) to notice bronze dust around a drain. Success prevents injuries and earns advantage on the first social check below. Failure causes a falling stall to deal 2d6 bludgeoning damage divided among characters who intervene.
2. Witnesses Without Faces
Tavi, Oren, and three merchants remember different details. The reliable overlaps are a red cord, the smell of hot metal, and a phrase, “the crown remembers.” A DC 14 group investigation using Insight, Investigation, or fitting magic reveals that each peal removed the newest connected memory, so asking about events backward reconstructs the masked route through the Spice Arcade.
3. The Cracked Cistern
A false wall behind empty water jars opens when three bronze taps are turned from coldest to hottest. Forcing it requires a DC 16 Strength check and raises Resonance. Inside, two Ashen Choir scouts guard Nera’s dropped key ring. They surrender if shown that Caldra left them where the next peal will erase their orders.
4. Procession Tunnel
The tunnel contains four hanging bells and pressure plates. Crossing requires three DC 14 successes before two failures using Acrobatics, thieves’ tools, Investigation, or Performance to move in the rhythm of the old procession. Each failure awakens one bell sentinel. The Echo Bell can be removed from a side niche with Nera’s key.
5. The Bronze Bell Gallery
Nera is tied inside the great bell to make her voice tune the ritual. Freeing her needs a DC 14 thieves’ tools or Strength check. Striking the gallery’s eight smaller bells in descending pitch cancels one Resonance and opens a maintenance bridge to the Furnace Gate. Nera can identify the correct sequence if kept conscious.
6. Caldra at the Furnace Gate
Caldra stands with two choir adepts and two bell sentinels. At initiative count 20, the furnace emits a pulse; creatures on chains make a DC 14 Dexterity save or fall prone, while creatures on platforms take 1d6 fire damage. Three actions spent cutting suspension chains, damping bells with cloth, or succeeding on DC 14 Arcana or Performance checks break the ritual. Caldra retreats at 20 hit points if the shard is lost, leaving her route ledger behind.

NPCs and Monsters
| NPC or Monster | Statistics | Key Abilities and Table Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nera Voss | Use commoner statistics; AC 10, HP 7. | Advantage on checks involving bells, acoustics, and old city records. She prioritizes evacuating civilians. |
| Sister Caldra | Use cult fanatic statistics with AC 15 and HP 52. | Replace spiritual weapon with a bronze bell dealing thunder damage. She disengages if reduced to 20 HP. |
| Ashen Choir Scout | Use spy statistics; AC 12, HP 27. | Carries smoke pellets that create a 10-foot heavily obscured area until the next round. |
| Choir Adept | Use cultist statistics; AC 12, HP 18. | Once per encounter, rings a handbell; one ally moves up to half speed without provoking opportunity attacks. |
| Bell Sentinel | Use animated armor statistics; AC 18, HP 33. | Deals thunder instead of bludgeoning damage. A creature can mute it with an action and a DC 14 Sleight of Hand check. |
Rewards
- 600 gp from Nera and the market council, plus 100 gp if no civilian is seriously injured.
- Echo Bell: While holding this wondrous item, the bearer has advantage on checks to find hollow spaces, concealed doors, or creatures using sound. Once per dawn, it can cast knock; only creatures within 30 feet hear the resulting tone.
- The First Crown Shard: Too dangerous to wear, but it grants advantage on one check made to understand volcanic magic during a later Ashfall Crown adventure.

Scaling the Adventure
For a 4th-level party, use cultists in place of choir scouts and only one bell sentinel in the finale. For a 6th-level party, give Caldra one use of shatter and add a sentinel to the gallery. For a three-hour session, begin with Tavi already holding Nera’s key ring and remove the cistern guards.
