Warden’s Wick

A silver-braided lantern wick that burns underwater and shields minds from the drowned.

Properties

Wondrous item, uncommon. The wick burns without fuel and cannot be extinguished by water. Once per dawn, the bearer creates a 15-foot-radius ward for 10 minutes. An undead creature attempting to charm a creature in the light must first succeed on a DC 14 Charisma check. The light is dim beyond the ward.

Lore

Elowen Rusk braided the wick around a river pearl before officials chained her inside the sluice tower. When the complete memorial is spoken, the pearl releases the last breath she held for the workers trapped below the dam.

Game Master guidance

The ward protects choices rather than ending encounters. It does not repel undead, prevent attacks, or reveal invisible creatures. Recharge it at dawn, and let clever players use its underwater flame as a signal or proof of Elowen’s reconciliation.

Related use

The item is designed as a memorable reward rather than a requirement for later play. A party without it can solve every related scene with the listed checks, tools, spells, or environmental choices.
