Mask of the Homeward Face

A two-sided wooden festival mask that remembers one safe destination and resists supernatural misdirection.

Properties

Wondrous item, uncommon, requires attunement. The wearer has advantage on saving throws against effects that alter direction, route memory, or recognition of familiar people. Once per dawn, the wearer may name a place they have personally visited. For one hour, a painted smile on the mask turns toward the shortest safe mundane route to that place.

Lore

The Ragcloak Huntsman carved the mask before Harrowgate had roads. Its happy face looks homeward, while its solemn face watches travelers still missing from the procession.

Game Master guidance

The mask does not reveal hidden doors or routes through solid barriers, and it chooses safety over speed. If no mundane route exists, both faces close their eyes until circumstances change.

Related use

The item is designed as a memorable reward rather than a requirement for later play. A party without it can solve every related scene with the listed checks, tools, spells, or environmental choices.
